Young Carers are children and young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse.
Many Young Carers feel that they are alone and are not aware that they can share experiences with other Young Carers. Many don’t know that there are supports available to help them in their roles. Other young people aren’t aware of the responsibilities Young Carers face and how they can support their friends or classmate who have caring responsibilities.
Family Carers Ireland are asking young people along with their teachers and youth leaders to take part in a new campaign to raise awareness about young carers in Ireland. #SeeYoungCarers involves students in secondary school taking part in a creative workshop whereby they make and decorate a pair of funky glasses from cardboard to show the world that they #SeeYoungCarers!
The students then spread the word about young carers by sharing photographs of themselves wearing their funky glasses on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #SeeYoungCarers.
All schools and youth groups are encouraged to take part in the campaign throughout the month of May. Workshop activity guides are available by contacting us.
